Soon Fronteer Strategy will cross the water and move to the NDSM-wharf. We are getting a brand new office with a great space for our co-creation sessions, a historic hangar… The original frame of the building is still  in tact as well as a lot of authentic details in the interior. The whole office will be of high quality and a great place to get inspired!

Formerly the NDSM-wharf was a shipyard and is located on ‘t IJ in Amsterdam-Noord. Read the rest of this entry »

Is empathy the new frontier in business?

empathy-on-shelf

On July 9th we held a workshop on business empathy with 4 major Dutch companies, all leaders in their category: banking, supermarkets, rice and cable companies.

This workshop was part of the Dutch Empathy Monitor 2010, conducted by Ruigrok | Netpanel in cooperation with Fronteer Strategy. One of the interesting outcomes: there is a positive correlation between empathy and attractiveness.

But how can these four large brands be empathic while serving literally all Dutch consumers between the four of them? How can they understand all these 17 million consumers? The truth is, they can’t. But they can at least start trying.

These are some of the brand challenges that came up during the workshop:

- How can a commodity- or technical brand be empathic?
- Is empathy the reason why people still write us real letters?
- Should we deal with all the millions of expanding on-line touchpoints our brand has?

James Veenhoff winnaar IJ-prijs 2009

Very succesful co-creation of a Business Modeling book

Posted: July 16th, 2009 | Author: | Filed under: co-creation, public speaking | Tags: , , , , | No Comments »

img_0182Here comes an inspiring story.

When researcher Alex Osterwalder was looking for a model for making business models, he could not find it. Or he could not find one he liked. None of them he found he could use across mutiple industries. So he decided to makes his own model together with a few other people. Enter Patrick. When Patrick van der Peijl found out about Alex’s project, he joined in and suggested to set up a community to make the book and model even stronger. The Hub was born.

What was so inspiring? When coming up with the idea to co-create abook on business modeling, they invented a new businss model with it. It was done before, but not with people actually paying for contributing. 400 People paid an average of 50 euros for being part of it, being able to suggest content, get the book first and be mentioned in the book. I thought it was a great examples of our 5 guiding principles of co-creation and presented my toughts on the official launch of the beta version of the book a few weeks ago in Amsterdam. 60 People showed up for a very well organised and inspiring day. The drawing is our model summarised by Paul den Dulk. The book launches later this year.

Anyone else with a new co-creation business model that works?

The official show schedule starts tomorrow night with the Fortis Opening Soiree, but a number of ambitious young designers make use of ‘empty’ slots in the schedule by showing ‘guerilla-style’. Tonight, Antoine Peters showed his AW09 collection, titled “I’m With Stupid”. Read the rest of this entry »

Monocle advice for Amsterdam

tyler-bruleeWHAT MAKES A CITY SUCCESSFUL?

Amsterdam Topstad is an ambitious project initiated by alderman Lodewijk Asscher, to mobilise entrepreneurs and individuals into a movement to get Amsterdam in the Top 5 lists of most popular, succesful, habitable, etc, etc cities of the world. The Topstad team organise regular ‘inspiration & network’ meetings to keep the fires burning.

Yesterday’s session (charmingly organised at a former pathology lab) focused on consequences of ‘The Crisis’ and what it means in terms of challenges and opportunities for Amsterdam. Guest lecturer was none less than Tyler Brulee, founder of our Wallpaper and Monocle (our favourit magazine of the moment) – arguably one of the world’s most inspiring lights on the topics of ‘How to make urban living as rich as possible’.
