Amsterdam reveals newest global marketing capital

Posted: November 7th, 2011 | Author: | Filed under: Amsterdam, NDSM-wharf | No Comments »

A few journalists passed by the other day and we were interviewed on Amsterdam as a emerging marketing hotspot. You can read the article by Jon Gingerich from O’Dwyer New York here.

This what Jon kindly wrote about us:

Fronteer Strategy, a brand consulting and development firm, is another creative group that now calls Amsterdam-Noord home. Firm Partner Martijn Pater referred to the neighborhood a “playground for artists,” a place that has been gaining traction since the country began its rebound from the global economic slowdown several years ago. Indeed, inside a former airplane hangar across the lot from the MTV studios, a colony of set designers, architectural consultants and furniture makers work in makeshift 200-square-foot cubicles constructed side-by-side across the length of the hangar. Amsterdam’s new creative underground bears a striking resemblance to a very large, very vibrant clubhouse.

Fronteer Strategy was formed in 2008. Their clients include big names like Heineken and Dutch airline KLM. Pater is a proponent of the marketing strategy known as “Co-Creation,” an open source marketing equivalent of crowdsourcing that unites a select cadre of interdisciplinary members across the branding spectrum — developers, stake-holders, even consumers — to share and create relevant brand solutions under one umbrella.

Last week one of our partners, James Veenhoff, managed to make it to the news twice. Being invited to speak at the Amsterdam Y-Community, Charlotte van Drimmelen - society-reporter at ‘Het Parool’ – caught him explaining how the internet has been affecting the fashion industry since the past decade.  Next, James also drew the attention of the ‘Algemeen Dagblad‘ while presenting his particular view on entrepreneurship at The Enterprize Experience in Rotterdam.

The New Fronteer Office – what a joy

Posted: January 17th, 2011 | Author: | Filed under: Amsterdam, NDSM-wharf, Uncategorized | No Comments »

We moved Jan 3 2011 to our new office at the NDSM – Mediawharf in Amsterdam. We feel lucky to be part of a special Amsterdam / International vibe where a few of the most iconic brands have set up shop. Our neighbours include the very-Dutch HEMA, MTV, RedBull, IDTV and many others.

We like you to come over for a cup of coffee and have a chat. Take one of the two ferry’s or get there by car. Come on in and see our new homebase which we have been carefully decorating, matching our ambition: becoming one of the best strategy agencies, with a personal approach. Our office part and the part which we use for our sessions should radiate that anyone is welcome and the atmosphere should invite everybody to think freely, creatively and constructively.

Our new address: NDSM-plein 20. 1033WB. Amsterdam.

Stay tuned for more. For example our new North by Northwest website, which is where you can see more of the space we use and rent out for sessions.

Maybe it’s just because the ‘Gift Giving’ season is upon us, but it feels like Luxury is ‘back from the dead’. On the cover of Forbes Magazine, Bernard Arnault shares his ambition to sell luxury to emerging markets. In the same week, Bain&Co’s luxury industry expert Claudia D’Arpizio traveled to Amsterdam to talk about ‘the state of the industry’. Whoever thought that luxury goods will be gone for a while… think again.

Soon Fronteer Strategy will cross the water and move to the NDSM-wharf. We are getting a brand new office with a great space for our co-creation sessions, a historic hangar… The original frame of the building is still  in tact as well as a lot of authentic details in the interior. The whole office will be of high quality and a great place to get inspired!

Formerly the NDSM-wharf was a shipyard and is located on ‘t IJ in Amsterdam-Noord. Read the rest of this entry »

Is empathy the new frontier in business?

empathy-on-shelf

On July 9th we held a workshop on business empathy with 4 major Dutch companies, all leaders in their category: banking, supermarkets, rice and cable companies.

This workshop was part of the Dutch Empathy Monitor 2010, conducted by Ruigrok | Netpanel in cooperation with Fronteer Strategy. One of the interesting outcomes: there is a positive correlation between empathy and attractiveness.

But how can these four large brands be empathic while serving literally all Dutch consumers between the four of them? How can they understand all these 17 million consumers? The truth is, they can’t. But they can at least start trying.

These are some of the brand challenges that came up during the workshop:

- How can a commodity- or technical brand be empathic?
- Is empathy the reason why people still write us real letters?
- Should we deal with all the millions of expanding on-line touchpoints our brand has?
