“We want to do something with an App…”

Posted: October 19th, 2011 | Author: | Filed under: Apps, co-creation, Mobile | No Comments »

That is what many companies these days are thinking because they believe it can bring them value. However, having an app just for the sake of it has never brought any company or brand anything but disappointment and unnecessary costs. An app has to add value for its user, it has to have a reason of being, and – as I have learned from our friends at Icemobile – a successful app is personal, relevant, easy, smart, time-saving, inspiring, genuine and/or empathic. I wonder what a group of 20 year olds would say if they were in our position?” This question, coming from Mo Ibrahim, a member of the Broadband Commission, led to a very interesting and inspiring workshop we were asked to facilitate yesterday at the ITU in Geneva during the WSIS (World Summit on the Information Society).

A group of (mainly) first year students of the EPFL (Technical Universtiy in Lausanne), were aksed to shine their light on the objectives and goals of the Broadband Commission. Read the rest of this entry »

Het publiek omdat het moet? (The audience because we have to?)

Posted: May 9th, 2011 | Author: | Filed under: co-creation, open innovation, public speaking | No Comments »

Being a consumer these days means you are allowed to give your opinion about everything. And not just allowed: it is highly valued, sometimes even expected and you can even become a part of a brand or product’s development process. Including the consumer is a trend that is also not missed in media-world. Only consumer is called the audience there. TV-shows and radio programs ever more often include them to become part of the show and let them co-decide on the content. But do they do it because they have to? Or because they want to? Or maybe just because they can? So… Het publiek omdat het moet? Read the rest of this entry »

9 Ways to get your team ready for co-creation

Posted: March 4th, 2011 | Author: | Filed under: co-creation, open innovation, Whitepaper | No Comments »

A new white-paper by Fronteer Strategy.

In the past decade, many companies have started changing from a closed to an open innovation model. Co-creation is a form of open innovation that has seen much growth over the last years. Those who practice co-creation understand that a lot of knowledge and value can be found outside the company walls. There are many benefits and drivers for co-creation, however, a lot has to happen before you will get the desired output.

Changing from a closed to an open innovation model is a process that doesn’t happen overnight. Implementation of co-creation usually results in a change process involving people, operations, policy and culture. All companies who start practicing co-creation will encounter barriers, questions and people with different motives, goals and priorities.

In order to provide some guidance during the first steps into the world of co-creation, in our newest white-paper, we offer you 9 ways to overcome these (social, psychological & organisational) barriers by giving direction, motivating your team and leading change.

Want to get your team ready for co-creation? You can find the complete white-paper here.

The Next Level in Opening Up

next-level-opening-upWhen we would have to choose a ‘perfect’ client, it would be one that has the same ambition that we have: being out there on the frontier, doing stuff others haven’t done before. I’m pleased to announce that we have found one: Nokia, already keen on co-creation, is going to stretch its boundaries when it comes to opening up to the public.

We are currently involved in a co-creation project organised around the Maemo Summit. Maemo – for those of you who are as software-illiterate as I am –  is an open source Read the rest of this entry »

Douwe Egberts shows its ‘accessible-ness’ in a truly inspiring co-creation session

Posted: July 29th, 2009 | Author: | Filed under: co-creation | Tags: , , , | 1 Comment »

serojWe love it when a plan comes together. We also love it when everybody is happy. And we love it when – again – the 5 principles of co-creation prove to be true.

Two weeks ago, I’d say a new standard was set for our Rooftop sessions when we held an expert co-creation session for Douwe Egberts. All the factors were accounted for: a very enthusiastic team from Douwe Egberts (a big thanks to all of you), a beautiful location (a new and very inspiring space in the portfolio of the Playing Circle) and, most importantly, an excellent team of experts (a big thanks to all of you, too) including fashion experts, trend analysts, product designers and marketing experts.

Douwe Egberts lived up to their recently acquired position of being one of the most accessible brands in the Netherlands. In the open atmosphere, everybody was eager to share their ideas, expertise and vision on the challenge at hand. The morning resulted in some very useful concepts, some of which I truly hope will be put into practice by Douwe Egberts. As for continuing development: one of the experts was so inspired that he actually started to work out some of the ideas (I’m very curious for those results) and Douwe Egberts is also in contact with another expert participant. A true feeling of co-creation, because lets face it: 99% of the best people do work outside of your company!

Strong media interest for Fronteer study on relationship between ‘open-ness’ and ‘attractiveness’ of brands

Posted: July 7th, 2009 | Author: | Filed under: brand development, research | Tags: , , , , , , , | No Comments »

ruigrok-researchThe research recently performed by Fronteer Strategy and market research bureau Ruigrok | Netpanel has been very well received in the media; it was aired on Radio 1 and the number of websites that published the results of the research exceeded expectations. Amongst them Adformatie, Molblog, Distrifood, VEA, Marketing Tribune and Zibb.

The results, that state that the more accessible a brand, the more it is perceived as “attractive” and “innovative”, are also picked up across the border: Frank Pillar links the research to a recently performed MIT research study by open innovation expert Eric von Hippel and Johann Füller.

Fronteer and some of the brands included in the research were present at Ruigrok’s ‘Zomerborrel’, where the results were presented as well. Some brands have already reacted to it and want to have deeper insights into the results. We are proud and happy that the research has brought about so many reactions and are looking forward to the potential continuation it can have.
